Parklands is a rapidly developed residential and commercial suburb within the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality in the Western Cape and therefore has no separate district municipality. It forms part of Cape Town’s Western Seaboard, inland from Bloubergstrand and Table View and near Sunningdale, West Beach, Sandown and Rivergate. Parklands Main Road, Gie Road, Sandown Road and Wood Drive connect the suburb with the R27 West Coast Road, Blaauwberg Road and the N7. Its generally level landscape contains houses, townhouse estates, apartment developments, schools, shopping centres, parks and remaining corridors of indigenous vegetation.
Parklands is a modern suburb rather than an old town with a single historic founding date. It emerged through the westward and northward expansion of Cape Town during the late twentieth century and grew especially rapidly from the 1990s onward as former peripheral land was subdivided for housing. The development incorporated elements associated with the garden-city approach, including planned streets, neighbourhood parks and residential areas arranged around schools and commercial nodes. Continuing subdivision and higher-density construction have since extended the suburb towards Parklands North, Sandown and the Rivergate area.
Long before suburban development, Khoekhoe pastoral communities and San hunter-gatherers used the wider Table Bay and West Coast landscape for seasonal grazing, hunting, gathering and movement between wetlands, dunes and freshwater sources. Dutch colonial settlement introduced farms, private land ownership and routes linking Cape Town with the West Coast, progressively restricting Indigenous access to the area. Much of the land later remained agricultural or sparsely developed until metropolitan growth transformed the Blaauwberg district into residential suburbs and commercial precincts.
Parklands has little conventional architectural heritage because most buildings are comparatively recent. Its development history is instead visible in the progression from early detached homes and townhouse complexes to apartment blocks, mixed-use centres and newer energy-conscious developments. Municipal planning decisions continue to regulate subdivision, density and construction because parts of the suburb fall within the Koeberg Restriction Area Overlay Zone. The Parklands and Sandown fynbos corridors are important surviving parts of the original natural landscape and connect the suburb with the wider Table Bay Nature Reserve system.
The suburb has a broad service economy supported by retail, property, construction, education, healthcare, restaurants, professional offices, transport businesses and home-based enterprises. Parklands College operates educational campuses in the area, while numerous other public and independent schools serve Parklands and neighbouring suburbs. Parklands Main Road and Sandown Road contain supermarkets, convenience stores, pharmacies, banks, gyms and shopping centres such as Parklands Mall and The Emporium. Larger medical facilities, public services and regional shopping are available in Table View, Sunningdale, Milnerton and Century City.
Parklands is primarily a residential base rather than a major sightseeing destination, but several coastal and nature attractions are nearby. Table Bay Nature Reserve includes the Parklands Fynbos Corridor, Sandown Fynbos Corridor and Rietvlei sections, protecting wetlands, dune strandveld and threatened Cape Flats sand fynbos. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching, walking and approved watersports at designated parts of the reserve, while Bloubergstrand and Big Bay offer beaches, surfing, kitesurfing and famous views of Table Mountain. Bloubergstrand, Big Bay and Table View provide a broader range of beachfront seafood restaurants and cafés. Summers are warm, dry and frequently windy, while winters are cool and wetter; congestion can be heavy on Sandown Road, Blaauwberg Road and the R27 during weekday peaks.
