Dana Bay, also known as Danabaai, is a coastal residential village and recognised urban conservancy within the Mossel Bay Local Municipality and the Garden Route District Municipality of the Western Cape. It lies approximately 10 to 12 kilometres west of central Mossel Bay, between Pinnacle Point and the coastal communities of Boggoms Bay and Vleesbaai. Access is provided from the N2 and regional roads through Mossel Bay, with Flora Road serving as an important local route. The village occupies rolling coastal hills above two long beaches and is characterised by sea views, vegetated dunes, ravines, limestone fynbos and undeveloped green corridors.
The land forming present-day Dana Bay was historically part of farms in the Mossel Bay district. The farm Oude Duinigt, which included the area, was allocated for grazing in 1821. In 1972 Sentraalwes Personeel Ondernemings purchased the farm Droogfontein and began planning a coastal and retirement settlement with approximately 2,000 plots. Two explanations are recorded for the name: it may honour Daan Serfontein, a former chairperson of Sentraalwes Koöperasie, or derive from “Daar-na-baai”, referring to a bay situated beyond Mossel Bay. Neither explanation has been conclusively established as the sole official origin.
Dana Bay’s heritage is closely connected with agriculture, planned coastal development and community conservation rather than with a historic town centre. Its streets were laid out with consideration for natural drainage, wildlife movement and fynbos dispersal, while many street names refer to indigenous plants such as proteas, aloes and ericas. Local conservation supporters began pursuing formal recognition during the early 1990s, and Dana Bay received conservancy status from CapeNature and Mossel Bay Municipality on 27 May 1998. It is widely described as the first formally recognised urban conservancy in the Western Cape.
The conservancy protects remnants of species-rich coastal and limestone fynbos together with ravines, dunes and interconnected green belts. Bushbuck are particularly associated with Dana Bay and are sometimes seen moving through gardens and undeveloped plots. Other wildlife includes small antelope, mongooses, tortoises and numerous coastal and fynbos birds. Residents and visitors are expected to drive carefully, avoid feeding or disturbing wild animals, protect indigenous vegetation and keep domestic animals under responsible control.
Dana Bay offers beach walking, birdwatching, wildlife observation, photography and seasonal land-based whale and dolphin watching. The approximately 12-kilometre St Blaize Hiking Trail links Dana Bay with the Cape St Blaize lighthouse area at Mossel Bay Point, following coastal cliffs and fynbos-covered terrain. The exposed route offers extensive ocean views but requires suitable footwear, water and attention to weather conditions. Dana Bay’s beaches are scenic and popular for walking and fishing, but official tourism information warns that swimming is prohibited because of dangerous currents and surf conditions.

Dana Bay has local shops, convenience services and takeaway options, but no full-service visitor restaurant within the village could be confidently verified through a current official website or municipal tourism listing. Self-catering visitors should obtain supplies locally or in Mossel Bay, while a much broader range of restaurants is available around Mossel Bay’s harbour, town centre, Diaz Beach and the Point. Verified Mossel Bay choices include Café Gannet, Kaai 4 Braai, Delfinos Seaside Restaurant and the restaurant at the Cape St Blaize lighthouse.
