Kathu is a modern mining, commercial and administrative town in the Gamagara Local Municipality, within the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality of the Northern Cape. It lies beside the N14 between Kuruman and Olifantshoek, approximately 200 km north-east of Upington and 280 km north-west of Kimberley. Kathu serves nearby mining operations, farming communities and travellers crossing the eastern Kalahari. Its broad streets, shopping areas and residential neighbourhoods are set among red Kalahari soil, grassland and distinctive camel-thorn trees.
Kathu owes its establishment to the development of the Sishen iron-ore mine. The new town was proclaimed in 1972 and physical development began in 1974 as housing and services were created for mine employees and their families. Kathu received municipal status in July 1979 and later developed into the principal administrative and commercial centre of Gamagara. The popular description “town under the trees” refers to the camel-thorn woodland surrounding the settlement, although published explanations of the precise linguistic origin of the name Kathu differ.
The town’s heritage reflects indigenous use of the Kalahari landscape, iron-ore exploration, railway development and the rapid growth of a planned twentieth-century mining community. Sishen Mine began production in 1953, while the original employee settlement of Sishen was later renamed Dingleton. Kathu subsequently became the main residential centre associated with the expanding mine. Iron-ore mining forms the foundation of Kathu’s economy. Ore is crushed, screened and beneficiated before being transported by rail towards Saldanha Bay. Kathu Forest is a nationally protected camel-thorn woodland and an important natural and heritage feature of the town. Sishen Golf Club winds through approximately 500 hectares of camel-thorn woodland, while the adjoining Kalahari Golf Estate includes a small wildlife area.
