Woodlands is an established residential neighbourhood within Mitchells Plain in the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality, Western Cape, and therefore has no separate district municipality. It lies on the Cape Flats, roughly 20 kilometres south-east of central Cape Town, near Lentegeur, Weltevreden Valley, Colorado Park and other Mitchells Plain neighbourhoods. Woodlands developed as part of the much larger Mitchells Plain housing project created during the 1970s. Larger commercial facilities are available at Liberty Promenade and other shopping areas across Mitchells Plain. Mitchells Plain Hospital and Mitchells Plain Community Health Centre provide major public healthcare services nearby, while schools and community facilities are distributed throughout the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Woodlands itself is not a conventional tourism destination and has no established heritage or sightseeing trail. Visitors exploring the wider Mitchells Plain area can visit Westridge Gardens, a landscaped public park with indigenous plants, recreation facilities and community events, or travel towards Wolfgat Nature Reserve on the False Bay coast for dune vegetation, coastal scenery and walking.
