Upington is the principal commercial, agricultural, educational and administrative centre of the Green Kalahari in the Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality, within the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality of the Northern Cape. Upington developed from the settlement of Olyvenhoutsdrift, a ford named for the wild olive trees that grew beside the Orange River. In 1870, local leader Klaas Lucas requested the establishment of a mission station, and Reverend Christian Schröder began working in the area during the early 1870s. The mission settlement, river crossing and police station gradually developed into a permanent town. It was later named Upington in honour of Sir Thomas Upington, who served as Attorney-General and subsequently Prime Minister of the Cape Colony.
The Kalahari-Oranje Museum is housed in the church and mission buildings erected by Reverend Schröder in 1875 and contains domestic objects, historical displays and material relating to Upington and the Lower Orange River.
