Raithby is a small historic mission village and farming community within the Stellenbosch Local Municipality and the Cape Winelands District Municipality of the Western Cape. It lies between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, just east of the R44 and close to Winery Road, approximately 12 kilometres from central Stellenbosch and about 8 kilometres from Somerset West. Vineyards, orchards, horse farms and agricultural properties surround its compact residential core, while the Helderberg Mountains dominate views to the east and Table Mountain can be seen in the distance.
The settlement developed after the abolition of slavery at the Cape in 1834. In 1845, the Wesleyan Methodist Church purchased the farm Moddergat, also known as Brackenbury’s Valley, as an agricultural settlement where formerly enslaved people and farm workers could cultivate their own allotments while earning income on surrounding farms. The land was acquired with assistance from a £100 donation associated with Mrs Brackenbury of Raithby Hall in Yorkshire. The settlement was renamed Raithby in 1851 in recognition of this connection.
Long before the mission settlement was established, Khoekhoe pastoral communities and San hunter-gatherers used the Helderberg foothills, streams, grazing land and routes between False Bay and the inland valleys. Colonial occupation transformed the region through private farms, vineyards, enslaved labour and the loss of Indigenous access to land and water. Raithby’s later establishment offered some emancipated families access to residential plots and agricultural land, although they continued to face economic dependence, discrimination and opposition from neighbouring landowners.
Raithby’s layout is an important surviving example of a nineteenth-century mission settlement. The church, school, cottages, allotments and central commonage were arranged to connect worship, education, agriculture and community life. The Wesleyan church was built around 1861 and remained a defining landmark for generations. Part of its façade collapsed in 2010, but the building was subsequently reconstructed. Stellenbosch Heritage Foundation regards Raithby as a rare settlement of high historical, spiritual, social and symbolic importance because of its direct association with emancipation and the history of slavery at the Cape.
Agriculture remains central to the surrounding economy, with vineyards, wine production, orchards, equestrian properties, accommodation, restaurants, events and residential development supporting employment. The village itself has limited shops and public services, and residents generally use Somerset West or Stellenbosch for hospitals, banks, large supermarkets and government services. Modern estates and property developments are appearing around the historic settlement, making careful heritage and landscape management important if Raithby’s traditional scale, commonage and agricultural setting are to remain legible.
Raithby is best explored as a quiet heritage and Winelands destination rather than as a conventional attraction-filled town.
