Pringle Bay is a small coastal village and holiday destination within the Overstrand Local Municipality and the Overberg District Municipality of the Western Cape. It lies on the eastern side of False Bay between Rooi-Els and Betty’s Bay, about 85 kilometres by road from central Cape Town. Clarence Drive, the scenic R44 coastal route, connects the village with Gordon’s Bay, Kleinmond and the broader Cape Whale Coast. Pringle Bay is framed by Hangklip Mountain, the Buffels River, a broad sandy beach, rocky headlands and extensive fynbos within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.
The bay was named after Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Pringle, who commanded British naval forces at the Cape from 1796 to 1798. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, plans were considered to develop the bay as a harbour from which agricultural produce could be transported across False Bay to Simon’s Town. The proposed port was never built, allowing the coastline to remain comparatively undeveloped. The modern residential village was laid out during the 1930s by the Hangklip Beach Estates consortium as part of a proposed coastal retreat extending through the Hangklip area.
Human occupation of the Hangklip landscape extends back to the Middle and Later Stone Age. Archaeological remains, coastal middens, stone tools and old fish traps indicate that hunter-gatherers used the area’s caves, freshwater streams, plants and marine resources over long periods. Khoekhoe pastoral communities later moved livestock through the coastal valleys and grazing areas. During colonial expansion, farms and state-controlled land gradually restricted Indigenous access, while remote mountain caves also provided refuge for runaway enslaved people, sailors and others living beyond colonial authority.
Hangklip’s prominent mountain was an important navigational landmark and was sometimes mistaken by early mariners for Cape Point. During the Second World War, military authorities restricted access to the area and established a secret radar installation on the mountain to monitor shipping and possible enemy activity in False Bay. Italian prisoners of war contributed labour to sections of the coastal road that became Clarence Drive. Improved road access after the war encouraged residential growth, while local conservation efforts helped prevent the dense urbanisation experienced in many other coastal areas.
Pringle Bay is primarily a residential and holiday community whose economy is supported by accommodation, restaurants, property, construction, household services, retail and nature-based tourism. A compact village centre provides cafés, food shops, small retailers and everyday services, while larger supermarkets, hospitals, banks and professional facilities are available in Kleinmond, Somerset West and the greater Helderberg area. The settlement forms part of Overstrand Municipality’s Ward 10 and is supplied with municipal water from the Buffels River Dam. As of July 2026, Overstrand reported no water restrictions, although permanent water-saving rules remain applicable.
Pringle Bay Beach, the Buffels River lagoon and the surrounding mountains are the principal attractions. Popular activities include swimming in suitable conditions, surfing, paddling, beach walking, birdwatching, seasonal whale watching, cycling and nature photography. The nearby Kogelberg Nature Reserve protects an exceptionally diverse fynbos landscape and offers controlled hiking and outdoor experiences. Visitors should remain on recognised paths, keep dogs leashed where required, avoid feeding baboons or other wildlife and check surf, weather, fire and road conditions before setting out.
