Pelican Heights, officially also recorded as Pelikan Heights in City of Cape Town documents, is a small formal residential neighbourhood within the broader Pelikan Park suburb of the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality in the Western Cape and therefore has no separate district municipality. It lies on the Cape Flats near Pelican Park, Eagle Park, New Horizons, Zeekoevlei, Strandfontein and Lotus River, roughly 20 kilometres south-east of central Cape Town. Strandfontein Road, Fifth Avenue, Oystercatcher Road and surrounding suburban streets connect the neighbourhood with the M5, Mitchells Plain, Grassy Park and the False Bay coast. The landscape is mostly flat and consists of detached homes, schools, sports grounds, small businesses and undeveloped sandy or wetland-influenced land.
Pelican Heights did not develop as an independently founded town, railway settlement or historic village. It emerged as a formal residential extension within Pelikan Park as Cape Town’s southern suburbs expanded across the Cape Flats during the late twentieth century. City census records classify Pelikan Heights as a sub-place grouped with Pelikan Park for municipal and statistical purposes. No single authoritative establishment date or documented explanation for the name could be confirmed, although the area’s bird-themed street names and proximity to False Bay’s wetlands reflect the coastal and wetland environment of the wider district.
Long before suburban development, Khoekhoe pastoral communities and San hunter-gatherers used the Cape Flats’ seasonal wetlands, dunes, grazing areas and routes between False Bay, Table Mountain and the interior. Colonial farming, private land ownership and drainage progressively changed this landscape and restricted Indigenous access to traditional resources. During apartheid, racial segregation and housing controls shaped residential growth across the surrounding Cape Flats, while later housing programmes attempted to address the severe shortage of affordable homes within the metropolitan area.

Its local economy includes property services, construction, vehicle repairs, convenience retail, food businesses, childcare, transport and home-based enterprises, while many residents commute to employment areas elsewhere in Cape Town. Schools and community organisations in Pelikan Park and Strandfontein serve the neighbourhood, and the Pelican Heights Sports Ground provides local recreational space. Larger supermarkets, healthcare services, banks and shopping facilities are available in Pelican Park, Grassy Park, Strandfontein, Ottery and Mitchells Plain.
Pelican Heights is not a conventional tourism destination and has no established visitor route within its residential streets. Nearby outdoor attractions include Strandfontein Beach and tidal pool, Blue Waters Beach, Zeekoevlei, Rondevlei and the wider False Bay Nature Reserve. These areas provide opportunities for swimming where supervised, picnicking, birdwatching, walking and nature observation. Visitors should check current beach water-quality notices, obey lifeguards and reserve rules, remain on recognised paths and avoid disturbing wetland birds or entering environmentally sensitive areas.

Most additional properties returned for the area are located in Strandfontein, Pelican Park, Muizenberg, Plumstead or other southern suburbs rather than within Pelican Heights itself. Pelican Heights has small neighbourhood takeaway outlets and home-based food businesses, but no visitor-focused restaurant with consistently verifiable public information could be confirmed inside the suburb. Strandfontein, Pelican Park, Grassy Park and Muizenberg offer a broader choice of restaurants, cafés, supermarkets and takeaway meals. Nearby destinations include Strandfontein Pavilion, Muizenberg Beach, Rondevlei Nature Reserve, Zeekoevlei and Wolfgat Nature Reserve. Summers are warm, dry and frequently windy, while winters are cooler and wetter; traffic on Strandfontein Road and connecting routes can become heavy during weekday peak periods.
