Newlands is a leafy residential, educational, sporting and commercial suburb within the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality in the Western Cape and therefore has no separate district municipality. It lies in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, between Rondebosch, Claremont, Bishopscourt and the mountain reserve, approximately eight kilometres south of the city centre. Main Road, Campground Road, Palmyra Road, the M3 and Newlands railway station provide access to central Cape Town and surrounding suburbs. Mature trees, mountain streams, historic estates, sports grounds and densely planted residential streets give Newlands its famously green appearance.
Long before colonial settlement, Khoekhoe pastoral communities and San hunter-gatherers used the eastern slopes of Hoerikwaggo, now called Table Mountain, together with the Liesbeek River, mountain streams, grazing grounds and routes across the Cape Peninsula. Dutch colonial occupation from the seventeenth century brought land grants, farming, water diversions and enslaved labour, gradually restricting Indigenous access to the landscape. The area’s reliable streams and fertile soils supported orchards, grain cultivation, livestock and early brewing, while farms and estates supplied the expanding settlement at Table Bay.
The suburb’s name developed from the estate known as De Nieuwe Land or Nieuwland, meaning “the new land”, which was associated with Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel around 1700. The property later passed through several owners and was subdivided as Cape Town expanded. Newlands did not originate as an independently proclaimed rural town; it grew from agricultural estates, water-powered industries, transport routes and increasingly fashionable residential properties. Railway access and the development of nearby Claremont helped transform the district into an established suburb during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Mountain water shaped much of Newlands’s industrial heritage. Commercial brewing developed beside the streams, and Jacob Letterstedt established the Mariendahl Brewery during the nineteenth century on the site associated with today’s Newlands Brewery. The brewery remains an important heritage landmark and offers organised historical visitor experiences. Josephine Mill, constructed in 1840 beside the Liesbeek River, preserves a surviving watermill connected with the district’s grain-processing history. The Montebello Design Centre occupies another historic property and supports creative studios, workshops, shops and food businesses.
Newlands is internationally known for sport. Newlands Cricket Ground opened in 1888 and remains an important venue for domestic and international cricket, with Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak forming its distinctive backdrop. The neighbouring Newlands Rugby Stadium hosted major matches for more than a century and remains an important part of South African rugby heritage, although top-level Western Province and Stormers fixtures moved to Cape Town Stadium. Newlands also contains schools, university-related facilities, medical practices, offices, shops and the municipal Newlands Swimming Pool.
Newlands Forest forms part of Table Mountain National Park and provides forest walks, mountain trails, picnic areas, birdwatching and access towards higher routes on Table Mountain. The forest combines indigenous vegetation with historic plantation areas, while SANParks continues rehabilitation and invasive-plant management. Visitors should use recognised paths, hike in groups, carry water and warm clothing and check current fire, weather and closure notices. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden borders the wider Newlands and Bishopscourt area and offers cultivated gardens, fynbos, walking routes and mountain scenery nearby.
