Mtubatuba is a busy agricultural, commercial and administrative town in the Mtubatuba Local Municipality of northern KwaZulu-Natal’s uMkhanyakude District. The town is named after Inkosi Mtubatuba, a long-serving traditional leader associated with the surrounding Zulu communities. The railway connected the district’s farms and sugar industry with Richards Bay, Durban and other regional markets, while the N2 later strengthened the town’s position on the main northern KwaZulu-Natal transport corridor.
Sugar production has played a defining role in Mtubatuba’s history. A concession to establish sugar milling operations in the Umfolozi area was granted in 1913, and the present mill traces its establishment to 1916. The Umfolozi Sugar Mill, located a few kilometres south of the town, processes cane grown across the fertile Mfolozi floodplain and surrounding farming districts. Historic cane-railway systems were also used to move harvested sugar cane to the mill.
