Modjadjiskloof is a small forestry, agricultural and administrative town in the Greater Letaba Local Municipality of Limpopo’s Mopani District. Situated approximately 18 kilometres north of Tzaneen, it lies near the R36 amid the foothills of the Wolkberg and northern Drakensberg. Timber plantations, subtropical orchards, wooded slopes and misty valleys create a green setting between the higher mountain country and the warmer Letaba Lowveld.
The town was proclaimed in 1920 and was originally known as Duiwelskloof. Historical accounts link the former name to the difficulty experienced by early wagon travellers when crossing the steep and densely vegetated kloof. It was officially renamed Modjadjiskloof in 2004 in honour of the Modjadji dynasty, the traditional matriarchal rulers of the Balobedu people who are widely known as the Rain Queens.
Modjadjiskloof developed as a service centre for surrounding plantations, farms and rural communities. Forestry became especially important in the cooler, wetter southern part of Greater Letaba, where pine and eucalyptus plantations supported timber harvesting, transport and related industries. The Royal Modjadji Nature Reserve is the area’s best-known natural attraction and protects an extraordinary forest of Modjadji cycads, Encephalartos transvenosus. Some of these striking plants grow more than ten metres tall, and the reserve contains one of the world’s most remarkable concentrations of a single cycad species.
