Milnerton is an established coastal suburb within the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality in the Western Cape and therefore has no separate district municipality. It lies on the northern shore of Table Bay, approximately 11 kilometres north of Cape Town’s city centre, between Paarden Eiland, Brooklyn, Century City, Montague Gardens, Bothasig and Table View. Marine Drive, Koeberg Road, Bosmansdam Road, the N1 and the R27 West Coast Road provide regional access, while MyCiTi bus services connect the area with central Cape Town and neighbouring suburbs. Milnerton was established in 1902 on land formerly forming part of the farm Janbiesjeskraal and was named in honour of Sir Alfred Milner, who served as Governor of the Cape Colony from 1897 to 1901. The settlement was promoted as a coastal residential estate north of Cape Town rather than as an agricultural village or independent administrative town. A railway line from Milnerton Junction reached the new suburb on 22 September 1904 and encouraged steady residential growth. Milnerton later became one of the earliest major suburbs along the northern Table Bay coastline.
Long before colonial farms and suburban development, Khoekhoe pastoral communities and San hunter-gatherers used the Table Bay shoreline, Diep River wetlands, seasonal grazing areas and movement routes across the Cape Flats. The lagoon, river and coastal plain supplied freshwater, fish, shellfish, plants and grazing. Dutch colonial occupation brought land seizure, farming, shipping activity and private property boundaries that progressively restricted Indigenous access to these resources. Later railway, road, industrial and residential development transformed much of the original dune and wetland landscape.
Several landmarks preserve Milnerton’s transport and maritime history. The wooden bridge across the lagoon was constructed from jarrah timber by the Royal Engineers in 1901 and once provided access to military works and the developing estate; it has since been restored as a heritage feature within the Table Bay Nature Reserve. Milnerton Lighthouse, commissioned in 1960, stands near Woodbridge Island and remains one of the suburb’s best-known landmarks. The historic railway station no longer serves regular suburban passenger trains, but the former rail corridor and early estate layout remain important parts of Milnerton’s development story.
Milnerton has grown into a large residential, commercial and employment area. Its economy includes retail, hospitality, property, construction, professional services, healthcare, education, light industry and businesses in neighbouring Montague Gardens and Century City.
