Mbombela

Discover Mbombela

Mbombela, formerly known as Nelspruit, is the capital of Mpumalanga and the administrative and commercial centre of the Lowveld. The city lies beside the Crocodile River along the N4 Maputo Corridor, with road connections towards Johannesburg, Pretoria, Mozambique, White River, Barberton and the Kruger National Park. Lush subtropical vegetation, granite hills, river valleys, orchards and distant escarpment mountains create a distinctive setting where urban development meets the Lowveld landscape.

The settlement’s growth began during the late nineteenth century when railway planners searched for a route linking the goldfields of the interior with Delagoa Bay, now Maputo. Plans for the railway were approved in 1884, and the line opened during the 1890s, encouraging businesses, farms and residences to develop around the station. The former name Nelspruit was associated with the Nel family and a nearby stream, while the official name was changed to Mbombela in 2009.

Mbombela is a siSwati name commonly explained as meaning “many people together in a small space”. This description suits the city’s role as a meeting place for residents, traders, travellers and communities from across Mpumalanga, Mozambique and Eswatini. After becoming the provincial capital in 1994, Mbombela expanded rapidly through new government offices, residential areas, retail centres, transport services and tourism-related development.

Government administration, retail, finance, healthcare, education, construction, manufacturing, logistics and tourism support the city’s economy. The N4 Maputo Corridor strengthens trade and transport between Gauteng and Mozambique, while Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport connects the Lowveld with other destinations. Agriculture remains important in the surrounding district, where citrus fruit, avocados, mangoes, macadamia nuts, bananas, litchis, vegetables and commercial forestry contribute to production and employment.

Mbombela has a warm subtropical Lowveld climate. Summers are hot, humid, green and rainy, with regular showers and thunderstorms, while winters are generally mild, sunny and considerably drier. Daytime temperatures can remain warm during winter, although mornings and evenings may be cooler. Visitors should carry drinking water and sun protection and should prepare for intense heat and sudden storms during the summer months.

The Lowveld National Botanical Garden protects indigenous Lowveld vegetation beside the Crocodile and Nels rivers and is known for its river scenery, waterfalls, suspension bridge, rainforest section, cycads and extensive fig-tree collection. Visitors can enjoy walking, birdwatching, photography and peaceful garden outings. Other local activities include sporting events at Mbombela Stadium, scenic drives, cycling and excursions into surrounding reserves and mountain areas. Wildlife sightings naturally vary according to the season and environmental conditions.

Accommodation in Mbombela includes Southern Sun Mbombela, Chill Pepper Boutique Hotel, Loerie’s Call Guest House, Francolin Lodge and a wide selection of guest houses, hotels and self-catering properties. Visitors can enjoy meals at Orange Restaurant, Jasmine Restaurant at Southern Sun Mbombela and the Botanical Tea Garden in the Lowveld National Botanical Garden, while the city’s malls and suburbs offer additional cafés, restaurants and takeaway outlets.
