Mashishing, still widely known as Lydenburg, is a historic mining, agricultural and commercial town in the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality of Mpumalanga’s Ehlanzeni District. It lies beside the Sterkspruit and Dorps River system at the western foot of Long Tom Pass, surrounded by the Steenkampsberg and Mauchsberg mountain ranges. The settlement was founded in 1850 by Voortrekkers who relocated from Ohrigstad after malaria and other hardships affected that community. They called the new settlement Lydenburg, meaning “town of suffering” in Dutch. The town became an important administrative and trading centre in the former South African Republic and later played a role in attempts to establish a transport route between the interior and Delagoa Bay, present-day Maputo.
The official name Mashishing was approved in 2006 following a proposal by Thaba Chweu Local Municipality and a formal geographical naming process. Mashishing is commonly translated as “long green grass”, reflecting the extensive highland grasslands surrounding the town. Although Mashishing is the official name, Lydenburg remains widely used by residents, businesses, tourism organisations and accommodation establishments.

Snow can occasionally occur on the highest surrounding mountains during severe winter weather systems.
The Lydenburg Museum, situated within Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve, presents the town’s archaeological, cultural and natural history. Replicas of the famous Lydenburg Heads are among its best-known displays; these decorated terracotta objects provide evidence of an established Iron Age community in the area more than a thousand years ago. The reserve and surrounding district offer walking, birdwatching, photography, cycling, trout fishing and scenic mountain drives.
