Lime Acres is a purpose-built mining town in the Kgatelopele Local Municipality, within the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality of the Northern Cape. It lies in the province’s mineral-rich interior near Daniëlskuil, approximately 160 km north-west of Kimberley, with regional roads connecting it to Postmasburg, Kuruman and Kathu. The settlement is surrounded by limestone formations, low rocky ridges, dry grassland, thornveld and extensive mining infrastructure. Residential neighbourhoods, schools, sporting facilities and local businesses mainly serve mine employees, contractors and their families.
The town developed around the area’s exceptionally rich limestone deposits and was planned as a residential settlement for employees of the lime industry. Lime Acres was reportedly named by Eric Lowther, a general manager of Northern Lime, with the name referring directly to the mineral resources that shaped the community. Its growth accelerated as quarrying, processing plants, employee housing and supporting infrastructure expanded during the twentieth century. Unlike an older farming town, Lime Acres owes its formation primarily to organised industrial development.
Lime Acres’s heritage is closely connected with limestone extraction, lime processing and diamond mining. The discovery of unusually rapid deterioration in local gravestones helped draw attention to the area’s limestone-rich geology. The nearby Finsch kimberlite pipe was discovered in 1960, and the diamond mine officially began operating in 1967. Mining initially took place through an open pit before underground development transformed the operation into a highly mechanised mine. The processing plants, shafts, railway facilities and planned residential areas preserve the character of a twentieth-century Northern Cape mining community.
Mining remains the foundation of Lime Acres’s economy. Limestone quarrying and processing historically supplied lime products for construction, steelmaking, water treatment, agriculture and other industrial uses, while Finsch Mine produces gem-quality diamonds from a large kimberlite pipe. These industries support miners, geologists, engineers, plant operators, contractors, transport companies, maintenance teams and local suppliers. Finsch entered business-rescue proceedings in May 2026 amid difficult diamond-market conditions, creating uncertainty for employees and the surrounding economy. Retail, education, municipal services, accommodation and food businesses provide additional livelihoods.
Lime Acres has a hot, semi-arid interior climate with summer rainfall. Summers are generally hot, with strong sunshine, afternoon thunderstorms, occasional hail and extended dry periods. Winters are dry and mostly sunny, although nights and early mornings can become cold and frost may occur across exposed ground. Dust, blasting activities, heavy mine vehicles, veld fires and sudden storms can affect local travel. Visitors should carry drinking water, use sun protection and obey all warning signs around quarries, haul roads, railway crossings and controlled industrial areas.
Mining properties around Lime Acres are operational or controlled industrial sites and may not be entered without formal permission. Visitors can enjoy the surrounding Kalahari landscape through scenic drives, birdwatching, cycling, stargazing and photography from recognised public roads and authorised properties. Lime Acres Golf Club provides local recreation when access and playing arrangements are available. Farther afield, the Daniëlskuil area offers access to Wonderwerk Cave and Boesmansgat, while Witsand Nature Reserve is known for pale dunes, hiking and birdlife. Wildlife sightings naturally vary according to the season and environmental conditions.
