KwaGingindlovu, historically known as Gingindlovu, is a small agricultural and service town in the uMlalazi Local Municipality of KwaZulu-Natal’s King Cetshwayo District. It lies near the N2 and R66, approximately 20 kilometres south-east of Eshowe and within reach of Mtunzini and the Zululand coast. The name KwaGingindlovu was first associated with one of King Cetshwayo kaMpande’s royal military settlements. It is commonly interpreted as “the place of the great elephant” or “the swallower of the elephant”, with the latter explanation linked to Cetshwayo’s victory over his brother Mbuyazi at the Battle of Ndondakusuka in 1856. The modern town later developed as farming, transport and administrative services expanded across southern Zululand.
KwaGingindlovu is closely associated with the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. On 2 April, a Zulu army attacked Lord Chelmsford’s fortified relief column as it advanced towards Eshowe, where British troops had been under siege. The Battle of Gingindlovu ended with the Zulu force withdrawing, and the Eshowe garrison was relieved shortly afterwards. A memorial and cemetery mark the battlefield area, although visitors are advised to use an experienced guide because there is little interpretive information at the site.
Agriculture forms the foundation of the local economy.
