KwaDukuza, historically also known as Stanger, is an important commercial, administrative and cultural centre in the KwaDukuza Local Municipality of KwaZulu-Natal’s iLembe District. It lies among the sugar-cane-covered hills of the North Coast, approximately 70 kilometres north of central Durban and a short drive inland from Blythedale Beach. The N2, R102 and regional roads connect the town with Ballito, Darnall, Zinkwazi Beach, Mandeni and the wider Dolphin Coast.
KwaDukuza occupies the site of a major royal settlement established by King Shaka in July 1825. The name is commonly associated with the settlement’s maze-like arrangement of thousands of traditional huts. King Shaka was assassinated at KwaDukuza on 22 September 1828, after which the royal settlement was destroyed. European settlers established a town on the site during the nineteenth century and named it Stanger after William Stanger, Natal’s first surveyor-general. The official place name later returned to KwaDukuza.
The King Shaka Memorial and Visitor Centre forms the heart of KwaDukuza’s heritage landscape. The memorial marks King Shaka’s resting place and stands near the site of his former royal residence.
