Kriel

Discover Kriel

Kriel, also officially referred to as Ga-Nala, is a coal-mining, power-generation and agricultural town in the Emalahleni Local Municipality of Mpumalanga’s Nkangala District. It lies on the province’s Highveld between Bethal, Ogies, eMalahleni and Secunda, within a landscape of open grassland, cultivated farms, coalfields, mine infrastructure and large power stations. Regional roads connect the town with the N17, N12 and the major industrial centres of eastern Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

The modern town was proclaimed during the early 1970s on portions of the farms Onverwacht and Roodebloem. It was developed mainly to serve nearby coal mines, power stations and farming communities and was named after D. J. Kriel, the first resident magistrate at Bethal. An older settlement existed in the district from the late nineteenth century, before industrial expansion transformed Kriel into a planned Highveld town.

Coal mining and electricity generation have shaped Kriel’s development more than any other industries. Kriel Power Station was constructed from the late 1960s and completed in 1979 with six generating units. Coal supplied from nearby mines is used to produce electricity for South Africa’s national grid. Mining operations, conveyor systems, railway infrastructure, power lines and cooling towers remain defining features of the surrounding landscape.

Mining, energy generation, engineering, transport, construction, retail and public services form the foundation of the local economy. Kriel Colliery continues to supply thermal coal, while supporting contractors and technical businesses provide employment across the district. Agriculture remains important beyond the industrial areas, with maize, soya beans, livestock and grazing found on surrounding farms. The town also serves nearby Ga-Nala and Thubelihle communities through schools, shops, healthcare facilities and municipal services.

Kriel has a cool, elevated summer-rainfall climate typical of the Mpumalanga Highveld. Summers are generally warm, green and rainy, with afternoon thunderstorms and occasional mist. Winters are considerably drier and colder, with clear days, frequent frost and very low early-morning and night-time temperatures. Strong winds and rapidly changing weather can occur across the exposed grasslands.

Visitors can enjoy golf at Kriel Golf Club, scenic drives through the Highveld, birdwatching around wetlands and farm dams, cycling and rural photography along public routes. The district’s open grasslands and seasonal wetlands support waterbirds, grassland birds and smaller animals, although mines, power stations and private farms may only be entered with authorisation. Wildlife sightings naturally vary according to the season and environmental conditions.

Accommodation in Kriel includes 12 At Jasmyn, Blackpony Guesthouse and Laconda Rosa Hotel, together with a limited selection of privately managed rooms and guest properties. A wider range of hotels and guest houses is available in nearby Secunda, Bethal and eMalahleni. Visitors can enjoy meals at Galito’s Kriel and KFC Kriel, while local shopping areas contain additional takeaway outlets and informal eateries. Current opening hours and meal services should be confirmed directly.

Nearby attractions include the Highveld landscapes around Kriel, Kriel Golf Club and the historic Battle of Onverwacht area associated with the final phase of the South African War. Longer outings can include Bethal, Secunda, Graceland Casino and Country Club, eMalahleni, the Witbank Dam area and the wider Cosmos Country route, where colourful cosmos flowers are often visible beside roads and fields during late summer and autumn. Whether you are exploring its history, enjoying its natural surroundings or simply relaxing, Kriel offers a memorable Mpumalanga experience.
