Hectorspruit is a small agricultural and tourism town in the Nkomazi Local Municipality of Mpumalanga’s Ehlanzeni District. It lies along the N4 Maputo Corridor between Malalane and Komatipoort, near the Crocodile River and the southern boundary of Kruger National Park. The town and the stream flowing through it were reportedly named after Hector, a faithful hunting dog remembered by early residents of the district. Hectorspruit also holds a place in the history of the South African War of 1899–1902. During the later stages of the conflict, General Louis Botha and other Boer leaders used the surrounding eastern Lowveld as a base from which to reorganise and continue guerrilla operations.
