Frere is a small rural settlement in the Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality of KwaZulu-Natal’s uThukela District. It lies between Estcourt and Colenso near the R103, N3 and the historic railway route towards Ladysmith. Open grassland, livestock farms, cultivated fields and low hills create the spacious inland landscape associated with the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and Battlefields region.
The settlement was named after Sir Henry Bartle Frere, who served as Governor of the Cape Colony and High Commissioner for Southern Africa from 1877 to 1880. Frere developed primarily as a railway station and agricultural service point rather than as a large commercial town. Its position on the main route between Estcourt and Ladysmith gave it strategic importance for the movement of passengers, mail, livestock and farm produce.
Frere became closely associated with the South African War of 1899–1902. British military operations were coordinated from the district during the campaign to relieve Ladysmith, and General Sir Redvers Buller used Frere as a headquarters for a period. On 15 November 1899, an armoured reconnaissance train travelled north from Estcourt through Frere towards Chieveley before being ambushed on its return journey. Winston Churchill, then a war correspondent, assisted in clearing the blocked railway before he and numerous soldiers were captured.
