Firgrove is a mixed residential, agricultural and industrial locality in the Helderberg area of the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality, Western Cape. As part of a metropolitan municipality, it has no separate district municipality. It lies between Somerset West, Macassar, Faure, Croydon and Raithby, approximately 40 kilometres east of central Cape Town. The N2, R102, Macassar Road, Winery Road and nearby R44 provide regional access, while the railway line passes through Firgrove. Its setting combines established neighbourhoods, smallholdings, vineyards, farmland, industrial properties and views towards the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland Mountains.
Firgrove developed from a rural farming district into a railway-linked settlement and later a residential and industrial suburb of the growing Somerset West area. The railway branch from Eerste River towards Somerset West and Sir Lowry’s Pass opened in stages around 1889 and 1890, improving transport through the district and encouraging activity near the station. Firgrove itself is primarily a working residential area rather than a conventional holiday destination.
