Cato Ridge is an inland town in the Outer West region of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, situated along the N3 corridor between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It lies approximately 30 kilometres south-east of Pietermaritzburg and about 50 kilometres north-west of central Durban, with access from the R103. The surrounding landscape combines industrial areas, farmland, open grassland and rolling hills near the Valley of a Thousand Hills.
The town is named after George Christopher Cato, a nineteenth-century businessman who became Durban’s first mayor. Cato Ridge developed along the historic inland transport route linking Durban with Pietermaritzburg and the interior. The railway and later the N3 strengthened its role as a transport and service centre, while the old R103 remains part of the traditional route between the two cities.
