Carolusberg is a small former mining settlement and residential locality in the Nama Khoi Local Municipality, within the Namakwa District Municipality of the Northern Cape. It lies approximately 7 km east of Springbok in the historic Okiep copper district of Namaqualand. Rocky granite hills, copper-bearing formations, dry valleys, sparse succulent vegetation and seasonal wildflowers shape the surrounding landscape. The locality developed around the Carolusberg copper deposits and the employee housing and services created by mining companies. Together with Okiep and Nababeep, it became one of the company-controlled settlements surrounding Springbok. Administration and municipal services were transferred from the mining companies to Nama Khoi Municipality during the late 1990s.
Carolusberg occupies an important place in South Africa’s copper-mining history. In October 1685, an expedition led by Simon van der Stel reached the nearby Koperberg and excavated exploratory shafts after observing copper-stained rock. More intensive exploration at Carolusberg began during the twentieth century, with economically important ore bodies identified through drilling from the late 1930s. Mining began in 1956, and the operation eventually developed deep shafts, an open pit and a large concentrator before becoming the last major mine in the Okiep district to close in 1998.
