Calvinia is a historic agricultural and administrative town in the Hantam Local Municipality, within the Namakwa District Municipality of the Northern Cape. It lies south of the Hantam Mountains at the meeting point of regional routes towards Nieuwoudtville, Brandvlei, Williston, Ceres and Upington. The town serves an extensive sheep-farming district and is one of the principal service centres of the Hantam Karoo. Calvinia was founded in 1845 on the farm Hoogekraal, which the Dutch Reformed Church acquired to establish a congregation for farming families scattered across the Hantam Karoo.
