Botha's Hill

Discover Botha's Hill

Botha’s Hill is a scenic settlement in the Upper Highway area of eThekwini, approximately 40 kilometres inland from central Durban and close to Hillcrest. Positioned along the historic Old Main Road between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, it overlooks the deeply folded landscape of the Valley of a Thousand Hills. Its elevated setting, green residential surroundings and sweeping viewpoints give the area a distinctly rural atmosphere despite its proximity to the city.

The origin of the name Botha’s Hill is not entirely certain. One account links it to Philip Rudolph Botha, an early settler and grandfather of General Louis Botha, while historical research has suggested that it may instead commemorate Cornelis Botha, a former harbour master at Port Natal. The settlement developed beside an important inland transport route, and its railway station, old road and position on the route now associated with the Comrades Marathon reflect its connections with travel between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

Botha’s Hill serves as a residential, educational, tourism and small-business centre for the surrounding Upper Highway and Valley of a Thousand Hills communities. Guest houses, restaurants, craft outlets, tourism attractions, schools and service businesses contribute to the local economy. Its position between Durban’s metropolitan areas and the more rural settlements farther west also makes it a convenient stopping point for travellers exploring the outer reaches of eThekwini.

The area has a mild inland subtropical climate influenced by its elevation. Summers are warm, green and humid, with regular rainfall, afternoon thunderstorms and periods of mist. Winters are generally dry and sunny, although mornings and evenings can be cool. Temperatures are often more comfortable than those experienced along the nearby Durban coastline, but visitors should bring a light layer for sudden changes in hilltop weather.

The surrounding landscape consists of wooded slopes, grass-covered ridges, river valleys and scattered rural settlements overlooking the Valley of a Thousand Hills. Visitors can enjoy scenic drives, photography, birdwatching and relaxed walks, while hiking, cycling and other outdoor activities are available across the wider valley and Upper Highway area. Indigenous vegetation and nearby natural areas support varied birdlife and smaller animals. Wildlife sightings naturally vary according to the season and environmental conditions.

Accommodation in Botha’s Hill includes Eagle Wind Manor, Lindisfarne Bed and Breakfast, Inn Afrika Bed and Breakfast, Valley Trust Accommodation and Conferences, and cottages and lodge accommodation at PheZulu Safari Park. These establishments provide options ranging from traditional bed-and-breakfast stays and country-style guest accommodation to self-catering units, group facilities and rooms overlooking the surrounding valley.

Visitors can enjoy meals at the Classroom Café at 1000 Hills Chef School and Brewery, the Nguni Café at PheZulu Safari Park and Mandala Café in Botha’s Hill. Local attractions include PheZulu Safari Park, cultural and craft experiences in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, and the viewpoints and businesses along Old Main Road. Nearby places worth exploring include Hillcrest, Assagay, Drummond, Inchanga, Shongweni Farmers and Craft Market, Inanda Dam and the walking trails and forest scenery of Krantzkloof Nature Reserve near Kloof.

Whether you are exploring its history, enjoying its natural surroundings or simply relaxing, Botha’s Hill offers a memorable KwaZulu-Natal experience.
