Belvidere is a historic residential village and lagoonside estate in the Knysna Local Municipality, within the Garden Route District Municipality of the Western Cape. It lies on the western shore of the Knysna Estuary, across the water from central Knysna and close to the routes leading towards Brenton-on-Lake and Brenton-on-Sea. The land formed part of the farm Uitzigt, which Knysna landowner and timber merchant George Rex acquired and renamed Belvidere, meaning “beautiful view” or “beautiful vista”. Duthie developed the property as a farm and family home before employing surveyor William Musgrove Hopley to plan a village with residential plots, common land and space for a church.
