Ashton is an agricultural, industrial and administrative town in the Langeberg Local Municipality, within the Cape Winelands District Municipality of the Western Cape. It lies on Route 62 between Robertson and Montagu, with the R60 providing access towards Swellendam and Bonnievale. The town stands between the Breede River and the foothills of the Langeberg Mountains in a fertile valley of orchards, vineyards and irrigated farmland. Ashton also accommodates the administrative head office of the Langeberg Local Municipality.
The settlement began as a trading post known as Roodewal on a farm beside the route between Worcester and the coastal districts. When the railway line was completed in 1887, Roodewal became a station and was renamed Ashton in honour of Job Ashton, a director and railway engineer of the New Cape Central Railways. The early settlement consisted mainly of the station, a warehouse, hotel, post office, school, shop, butchery and a small number of homes. Ashton received municipal status in 1956.
Ashton’s heritage reflects railway development, farming, fruit processing and the growth of cooperative agriculture in the Langeberg Valley. The town expanded rapidly after the Langeberg Cooperative was founded in 1938 and opened its processing facilities during 1939 and 1940. A second canning factory followed in 1949. Steam locomotive number 2010, a Class 14CR locomotive displayed beside the municipal offices, commemorates the railway that shaped the settlement and operated along the Worcester–Mossel Bay line.
