Morgenzon is a small farming town in the Lekwa Local Municipality of Mpumalanga’s Gert Sibande District. It lies on the open Highveld plains beside the Osspruit River, approximately 45 kilometres north-east of Standerton and roughly midway between Standerton and Ermelo. The name Morgenzon is Dutch for “morning sun”. The town was laid out in 1912 on a farm of the same name after local farmer De Jager donated land for its establishment. Morgenzon developed around the sandstone Marnico Hotel, which was built in 1912 as an overnight stop for wagon travellers journeying between Standerton and Ermelo.
